Hotel-Heinz Fürstenberg Castle, the picturesque ruin over Rheindiebach and the Rhine
The ruins of Fürstenberg Castle are surrounded by vineyards and was built in 1219 by the archbishop of Cologne to protect his property. The castle was taken by the Spanish in 1620 and in 1632 by the Swedish and finally destroyed by the French during the Palatine war of succession and remained in state of decay ever since. There can be seen parts of a massive shield wall, a high, circular shield keep and remains of a residential building. Even a piece of the colourful painted medieval plaster remained.
